Birth certificate	An official certified birth record for the person and event requested. Some records have access restrictions.
Marriage certificate	The registered marriage record. The city or town where the license was filed matters; it may differ from the wedding location.

Negative Statement of Event	A certified result when a requested event record is not located within the specified search. Confirm the names and period required.

These are the main records customers ask us to retrieve and apostille. We review record availability and authorization before accepting the retrieval work. Having an apostille does not replace the receiving organization’s requirements.

Other Registry requests: check the document first

The Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics also handles amendments and corrections, delayed registration processes, eligible pre-adoption birth-record requests and divorce-location inquiries. A certificate of birth resulting in stillbirth is a separate record with its own eligibility and request process. If one of these applies, tell us the exact record requested so we can review whether retrieval assistance is available and what certification, if any, is appropriate.

A pre-adoption record can be non-certified and should not be treated as an ordinary apostille-ready birth certificate. An amended or delayed record may be available only after the relevant registration process is complete. We do not promise that every Registry document can be retrieved by a third party or apostilled.

Divorce decrees and court records follow a separate route

The Registry can help identify a divorce docket number and court, but the actual certified divorce record comes from the court. If you need a Certificate of Divorce Absolute, divorce judgment, adoption order or another court document, use our Massachusetts court-document retrieval service so the correct custodian and certification can be reviewed.

How retrieval and apostille service works

1. Tell us what you need

Start with the record type, Massachusetts city or town, approximate event date and destination country. Include the recipient’s written instructions and whether you already have a certified copy. You may be able to use the record you have.

2. Confirm the retrieval route and quote

We check the appropriate custodian, availability and any identification or authorization requirements. RVRS currently holds records from 1936 onward; earlier records require a different custodian review. Not every event can be located from a name alone.

3. Obtain and prepare the record

For an apostille request, the starting record must meet the applicable certification requirements. An ordinary photocopy or notarized photocopy of a vital record is not a substitute for the official certified record. We discuss the required format before you pay for additional copies.

4. Complete certification and return delivery

We coordinate the agreed apostille or authentication service and return delivery. If embassy legalization is needed, we review the additional steps. Translation is arranged separately with your chosen provider; share its requirements so we can review the sequence. Include the final delivery location and required arrival date so they are part of the plan.

What about proof of single status?

A Massachusetts marriage-record Negative Statement covers the particular search performed. It is not a nationwide declaration that someone has never married. No. Search results depend on the information supplied and the records held. If a responsive record is not found, the issuing office may provide a Negative Statement rather than the certificate requested.
