Preparation & service details
Boston Notary Service assists with copy certification for eligible documents. Share the original document type and the receiving organization's instructions so we can confirm the appropriate preparation.
What is copy certification?
A notary compares a copy with the original presented for the copying and certification process. This is a different service from notarizing a person's signature on an affidavit.
What should I bring?
- The original document
- The recipient's written requirements
- Details of the number of copies needed
- Your destination country if the document will be used abroad
Can every photocopy be certified?
Requirements depend on the record and its intended use. Government-issued records may require an official certified copy directly from their issuing office. We review your request before confirming eligibility.
Need a passport or academic-document copy?
Tell us exactly what the receiving organization requested. Copy certification, registrar certification and apostille preparation may involve different steps.

Questions before you book
Is copy certification the same as a copy-attestation affidavit?
No. Copy certification involves comparison with the original; a copy-attestation affidavit involves notarization of a person's sworn statement. Share the recipient's instructions so the requested process can be reviewed.
Can this replace an official certified vital record?
An official certified birth, marriage or death record may need to come directly from its issuing office. Ask the recipient which record it requires.
Should I bring the original?
Tell us what document you have and whether the original is available before arranging the appointment.
Do you need an official certified record or an attested copy?
The answer depends on the document and the recipient. A state-issued birth record, a university diploma and a passport copy can have different preparation requirements. Send the written request before booking a copy-attestation appointment. Some records must be obtained as certified copies from their official custodian and cannot be substituted with a notary's copy certification.
Copy attestation requests around Boston
Tell us whether the original can be presented in Boston, Cambridge, Brookline or another Greater Boston location. Include the number of copies and whether the document is for a domestic application or use abroad. If an apostille is also requested, we review that additional step before confirming preparation; notarization alone does not provide an apostille.
