How to Apostille a Massachusetts Marriage Certificate
Updated: 19 hours ago
To apostille a Massachusetts marriage certificate, start with an official certified record, confirm the destination country and arrange the appropriate certification and return delivery. Boston Notary Service can review your existing certificate or discuss eligible retrieval before coordinating the agreed service.
Which starting point fits you?
What you have | Your next step |
An official certified marriage certificate | Tell us which office issued it and where it will be used. We can review preparation before you send the record. |
No certificate, or only a scan | Ask about obtaining an eligible certified copy. Record access, identification and authorization requirements must be confirmed. |
A marriage license or ceremonial keepsake | Confirm that you have the registered marriage certificate needed by the recipient before arranging an apostille. |
How the marriage-certificate apostille process works
1. Confirm where the certificate will be used
Share the country, receiving organization and written instructions. Ask whether the recipient requires a recently issued certificate, a particular format or a translation. Where the Apostille Convention applies, an apostille replaces the traditional legalization process. Other destinations may require authentication and further legalization steps.
Use the Apostille Country Guide to explore the likely route, then include the recipient’s instructions with your request.
2. Obtain the right certified marriage record
Use a certified copy from the appropriate Massachusetts records office. Boston holds the record when the marriage license was filed in Boston—even if the wedding took place elsewhere. The ceremony location alone does not tell you which city or town holds the record.
If you need a new copy, tell us where the license was filed and whether you already know the record’s availability. Some marriage records are restricted. We confirm eligible retrieval and any access requirements before accepting that part of the request. Newly married? The completed license must first be returned and registered.
3. Review the certificate before submission
An ordinary photocopy, scan or notarized photocopy of a marriage certificate is not a substitute for the appropriate official certified record. Massachusetts does not authenticate out-of-state records; those follow their issuing jurisdiction. Share any uncertainty about the document before mailing it.
4. Confirm processing and return arrangements
We confirm the agreed preparation, submission and return-delivery services with you. Include the date the completed documents must arrive—not just your departure date—and tell us whether delivery will be within the United States or overseas. Wait for the available timing and shipping arrangements to be confirmed before making plans around them.

Marriage certificate apostille FAQs
Does my marriage certificate need to be notarized first?
Use the official certified record from its custodian. Adding a notary’s copy attestation to a photocopy does not replace that record or make it eligible for Massachusetts authentication.
Can you help if I live outside Massachusetts?
Yes—start with an online request and tell us where you are located. We can discuss handling an existing record or eligible retrieval, plus domestic or international return delivery. Any restricted-record requirements still apply.
How much does the service cost, and how long will it take?
The quote depends on whether you have the correct record, need retrieval, require additional certification steps, and where the completed documents must be delivered. Send those details and your deadline for the applicable price and available timing. A rush request needs confirmation for the specific documents.
Will the apostille replace a translation or guarantee acceptance?
No. An apostille authenticates the origin of the document; it does not translate it or decide the receiving organization’s requirements. Confirm any translation, document-age and application requirements with that organization.
What if I am getting married abroad rather than proving an existing marriage?
Ask the overseas recipient for its document list. It may request different records. Our single-status and Negative Statement guide explains two possible document types; confirm which one the recipient requires.
