FBI Background Check Apostille: Washington, DC Preparation Guide
Updated: 18 hours ago
Using your FBI background check abroad?
First confirm that the recipient wants an FBI Identity History Summary and how recently it must have been issued. This federal report follows the U.S. Department of State route, not a Massachusetts apostille. Boston Notary Service can review your document and coordinate the agreed federal submission and return delivery.

1. Confirm the record and destination
An FBI report, Massachusetts CORI and local police record are different documents. Ask the receiving office which it requires. Share the country, purpose, issue-date limit and translation instructions. The fact that a report has an apostille does not determine eligibility for a visa, job or citizenship application.
2. Obtain the FBI-issued result
Follow the FBI’s current Identity History Summary request instructions. Electronic submission, fingerprints and channeler eligibility have their own requirements. If using a channeler, check the FBI-approved list and whether that option is available for your request. Ordering the report and obtaining its apostille are separate processes.
3. Keep the complete report intact
Keep the original FBI-issued PDF and every accompanying page, or the issued paper result. Do not crop pages, alter the signature or add a notarial certificate to the federal document. A notarized photocopy does not convert an FBI result into a Massachusetts record.
Have a PDF already? Tell us that when starting your request. We review the complete file and explain the required submission format. An electronic review copy is not itself an electronic government apostille, and an emailed scan may not replace the physical packet required by your recipient.
4. Confirm apostille or authentication
The federal apostille route applies when the Apostille Convention covers the document and country relationship. Otherwise authentication and destination-country legalization may be required. We check the route for your document rather than treating every destination alike.
5. Plan processing and delivery
Allow separate time for requesting the report, preparation, federal processing and shipping. Check current Department of State instructions when ordering. Tell us the date the completed documents must arrive; we confirm available handling options after review. A deadline alone does not qualify a request for emergency processing.

Common questions
Can Massachusetts apostille my FBI report?
No. An FBI-issued report is a federal document. Its original federal certification follows the federal route.
Can you help while I am outside the United States?
Tell us where you are and where the completed packet must be delivered. We review the available submission and return arrangements for your request.
Should I email my report to ask a general question?
For an initial inquiry, provide the report type, destination and deadline. Keep Social Security numbers, credentials and sensitive report contents out of general email or chat. We will explain the appropriate next step for review.
Ready to plan your FBI apostille request?
Tell us the document type, issuing location, destination and arrival deadline. We review what you have, explain the preparation and confirm the agreed service, quote and return options before you proceed.
