Preparation & service details
Located outside Massachusetts and need an FBI Identity History Summary for use abroad? Boston Notary Service coordinates federal apostille or authentication assistance for clients across the United States, including document review, the appropriate submission route and agreed return delivery.
FBI reports follow a federal route
An FBI-issued report is a federal document. Its apostille route is handled through the U.S. Department of State, not the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth. Do not notarize or alter the original report. If your packet also includes a birth certificate, diploma or other state-issued record, list each separately so its authority and route can be reviewed.
What to include in your request
- Whether you already have the FBI Identity History Summary
- The report issue date and the format you received
- Destination country and the recipient’s instructions
- Number of federal and state documents in the packet
- When the recipient needs the documents
- Your current location and preferred return-delivery address
The receiving organization sets its own report-age rule and deadline. Confirm whether its deadline is for submission, arrival or another event. Tell us if you still need to obtain the report; an estimate depends on the actual document and current requirements.
What happens next
- We review your document details and recipient instructions.
- We confirm the proposed federal route, preparation, scope, quote and current estimate.
- After you approve the plan, we coordinate the agreed submission and tracked return delivery.
A destination may require an apostille or another authentication and embassy-legalization sequence. Requirements depend on the destination and recipient. Certification authenticates an eligible signature or seal; it does not verify report contents or guarantee acceptance.
For sensitive reports, do not post the full document in a public message. We will confirm an appropriate handling method as part of the request.
For applicants outside Massachusetts
Your home state does not turn an FBI-issued report into a state document. Identify the actual issuer and format, then share where the completed packet should be delivered. If you also need state vital records or university documents, list those as separate items.
Can an overseas client start the process?
Tell us whether you already have the FBI report and whether it was received electronically or on paper. Confirm the submission format with our team before mailing originals. Include the recipient’s report-age requirements and whether translated certification is requested.
How do I compare a complete quote?
Ask which preparation, federal processing coordination, return shipping and optional handling are included. The required arrival date matters as much as the desired submission date. Government processing and international delivery are separate parts of the overall timeline.
Request federal apostille assistance
Include “FBI report,” your destination and deadline. We can also review a mixed federal and state packet as separate routes.

Federal background-check apostille assistance beyond Boston
An FBI report follows the federal certification route regardless of which U.S. state you live in. Tell us your current location and return destination so handling and shipping can be reviewed. A local or state criminal-record search is a different document and should be identified separately.
Sending documents while living overseas
If you already live outside the United States, share the destination country, recipient's report-age requirements and whether you have an electronic or paper FBI-issued report. Ask about the agreed submission format before mailing originals. If your application also needs state-issued records, list every issuer so the federal apostille work can be coordinated alongside the separate state routes and delivery requirements.
