United Kingdom · At a glanceDestination: United Kingdom 🇬🇧, an Apostille Convention party. U.S.-issued documents generally need the appropriate U.S. certification route. The UK Legalisation Office does not legalise documents issued outside the UK. Start with your recipient’s written instructions, including the exact record, original-versus-copy requirement and deadline. |
Who issues the apostille for a U.S. document going to the UK?
The UK government’s Legalisation Office service is for eligible UK documents. Its published guidance directs people with documents issued outside the UK to have them legalised in the country of issue.
For a qualifying Massachusetts public record or properly notarized Massachusetts document, the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth is normally the relevant state authority. Federal records, such as an FBI background report, require federal handling. A document issued in another state needs that jurisdiction checked separately.
The U.S. Embassy in London also explains that U.S. embassies and consulates do not affix apostilles to U.S. documents. If you are already in the UK, the preparation and submission may still need to be coordinated in the United States.
Tell us who will receive the document
A solicitor handling an estate or property matter
Ask for the precise court record, authority document or certified copy needed. Have the solicitor approve any prepared document and signing instructions.
A university or professional body
Confirm whether it wants an apostilled diploma, transcript, degree confirmation or direct institutional verification. These requirements are not interchangeable.
An employer or onboarding team
Obtain the requested record type, acceptable date of issue and any background-check instructions. Do not assume an FBI report is required for every employment request.
A registry or other public authority
Ask which birth, marriage, death or divorce record is required and whether a recently issued certified copy is necessary.
A bank or company
Distinguish a certified-copy request, proof of authority and a request for an apostille. Share the recipient’s checklist before arranging a signing.
Prepare the correct original or certified record
For Massachusetts vital records, use an official certified copy from the relevant records office. For a court matter, identify the court and the precise certified record requested. A download from a case portal or an ordinary photocopy may not meet authentication requirements.
For a privately prepared document, the required notarial act must be completed correctly. Boston Notary Service can assess a mobile appointment for eligible prepared documents; we do not decide the legal wording or choose the authority a signer should grant.
For school records, contact the registrar before treating a printed transcript or diploma copy as ready for an apostille. Tell us whether the UK recipient needs each record separately certified, whether an original diploma may be used and whether direct university transmission is required.
Already living in the United Kingdom?
You can begin your request from abroad. Tell us where the U.S. documents are now: with you, a relative, a university, a court or a records office. We can assess eligible Massachusetts retrieval and authorized pickup so you know which steps can be coordinated without a trip to Boston.
If a document still requires your signature, your location matters. A Massachusetts mobile notary appointment cannot be assumed to cover a signer located overseas. Ask the receiving solicitor or institution to approve the signing route, and tell our team before sending the document.
For records already prepared, confirm handling and shipping instructions before mailing originals. Your name, email, telephone number with country code, document list and destination deadline help us organize the request efficiently.
State records and FBI reports should be planned separately
A packet can contain more than one certification route. For example, a Massachusetts birth certificate and an FBI background report should not be assumed to share the same authority or processing time. Do not notarize an original federal document to try to obtain a Massachusetts apostille.
We identify the agreed handling for each item and explain how separate routes affect the quote and delivery plan. Your UK recipient decides whether the document satisfies its application requirements; an apostille does not verify the document’s contents or replace substantive approval.
From Boston to the UK: service and delivery
Start with a document review and confirmed scope. Depending on the request, services can include eligible retrieval, registrar coordination, a prepared-document notary appointment, apostille handling and final return by FedEx or DHL.
Provide the full delivery address, UK postcode, recipient or department name and telephone number with country code. Tell us whether the originals go to you, a solicitor or an institution, and whether signature-required delivery is preferred.
Timing depends on document readiness, issuing authority, retrieval and courier transit. We confirm available options after review and do not treat a government estimate as a guaranteed delivery date.
Frequently asked questions
Can the UK Legalisation Office apostille my Massachusetts certificate?
Its published service does not legalise documents issued outside the UK. A U.S. document should be assessed under the appropriate U.S. issuing authority’s requirements.
Can the U.S. Embassy in London issue my U.S. apostille?
No. The embassy explains that it does not affix apostilles to U.S. documents. Eligible state and federal documents require the appropriate U.S. authority.
Can you help retrieve a record while I am overseas?
We can assess eligible Massachusetts vital-record, court-record and authorized university pickup requests. Availability depends on the document and any access or authorization requirements.
Do all documents for the UK need an apostille?
No blanket assumption should be made. Ask the receiving institution, solicitor or authority for its exact certification requirement before ordering service.
