Preparation & service details
Need an apostille for an FBI background report? Tell us which FBI report you have, where it will be used and when you need it. Boston Notary Service can review the recipient’s instructions, confirm the federal route and current options, and quote the agreed preparation and return delivery before you send original documents.
Start your FBI apostille request
What we need for your quote
- Your FBI-issued report and its issue date
- Destination country and recipient instructions
- Document count and required delivery date
- Your location and return-shipping destination
The federal route
FBI reports are federal documents. Their apostille route is through the U.S. Department of State, rather than the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth. Do not notarize the original federal report; contact us before altering it.
How it works
- Review the supplied report and recipient’s requirements.
- Confirm the submission route, preparation, quote and current estimate.
- Coordinate processing and agreed return delivery.
Standard and expedited requests
Ask us to confirm the currently available option. Government processing, shipping and document readiness determine the total timeline. An estimate is not a guaranteed completion date.
Common requests
Clients may need an FBI report for work, residency, study or other applications abroad. The receiving authority determines the required report age and whether additional legalization is necessary.
Destination requirements
Apostille, authentication and embassy legalization are different routes. We review the document’s origin and recipient instructions before confirming preparation. Certification does not guarantee acceptance by every recipient.

Already have the report—or still need to obtain it?
Tell us whether you already have your FBI Identity History Summary, when it was issued, and whether it is electronic or paper. If you are still arranging the report, say so. We can review the next steps once we know what will be submitted.
Check the recipient's deadline and report-age rule
Ask the recipient how recent the background check must be and which event its deadline applies to: submission of your application, arrival of the documents or another milestone. A report can be ready for certification yet fall outside a recipient's accepted age window. Share the instructions before ordering a replacement or selecting a delivery option.
One packet can involve more than one authority
A request may include an FBI report plus a Massachusetts birth certificate, university document or power of attorney. List these separately. The federal report and state documents do not all follow one certification route. Tell us whether the recipient requires them together or accepts separate deliveries.

Ready for a specific plan?
Start with the destination, report issue date, document count, arrival deadline and return country. Boston Notary Service will confirm the requested scope and quote. Please use an agreed document-handling method for sensitive reports rather than posting them in a public message.
For Boston-area applicants with a mixed packet
An overseas employer may request an FBI report while a civil registry asks for a Massachusetts birth certificate or a university diploma. List the documents individually. Their issuing authorities determine separate preparation and certification routes, even when you want the finished packet returned together.
Is a local police check the same as an FBI report?
No. Identify the document title and issuing agency before requesting an FBI apostille. A Massachusetts or local background record should not be routed as though it were an FBI-issued Identity History Summary.
What should my inquiry include?
Start with the report issue date, format, destination, recipient’s deadline and shipping country. If the report is not ready, say so. We can then review the actual remaining steps instead of giving an estimate based on a document you do not yet have.

FBI report apostille requests from Greater Boston
For a Boston, Cambridge or Somerville applicant, the key distinction is the report's issuer. An FBI Identity History Summary follows the federal certification route even when you obtained it while living in Massachusetts. A local police clearance is a different document. Send the report title and recipient instructions so these requests are not confused.
Applying for a visa, residency or employment abroad?
Confirm whether the recipient accepts your report format, how recently it must have been issued and whether it needs the apostille translated. If your appointment is already scheduled, include that date and the delivery country. We can then review the federal background-check apostille work separately from any Massachusetts documents in the same application.
