Need your Massachusetts driving history for a license exchange, employment application or another request abroad? Start with the receiving office’s written requirements. True and attested or unattested?
The RMV offers an unattested record for personal information and a true and attested record for official use. The latter carries the Registrar’s signature. You can order a true and attested record online; the RMV mails it to the record holder at the address on file. An immediate online record is a different product. Check the RMV’s current instructions before ordering.
1. Confirm exactly what the receiving office wants
Ask for the required record name and how recently it must have been issued.
Confirm whether the recipient needs an apostille, authentication or another form of certification.
Check whether a driving history, explanatory letter or translation is also requested.
Keep the recipient’s written instructions so we can review them with your document.
A driving record and a full certified driving history are separate RMV requests. Do not order the longer record simply because it sounds more official; ask the recipient which one it requires.
2. Arrange the eligible record
If you already have the record, keep its cover letter and all pages together. If you need retrieval assistance, tell us first. The RMV has authorization and identification requirements for requests made by someone other than the license holder. We review what is needed before agreeing to retrieve it.
Avoid sending license numbers or identity-document images in a general email. Start with the record type and destination; we will explain the appropriate delivery method for the next step.
3. Review the signature and certification route
Massachusetts certification depends on an eligible original official signature. A notary stamp on a photocopy of a government record does not replace the required official document. We review the actual RMV certification before confirming submission; the words “certified record” alone are not a guarantee of apostille eligibility.
The destination also matters. We check the applicable apostille or authentication requirements for your request rather than treating every country as the same process.
4. Plan processing and return delivery
Allow time for the RMV record, any certification review, submission and delivery. Tell us when the completed document must arrive, including time needed by a separately chosen translation provider. We confirm available service options after reviewing the document. Urgent handling does not guarantee a particular agency turnaround.

Can I order the official record online? Yes. The RMV offers an online request for the true and attested record, which is mailed. That is different from downloading an unattested record for personal use.
Will an apostille guarantee my license exchange? No. Certification authenticates the relevant signature or seal. The receiving authority still decides whether your record meets its requirements.
